On a rainy Sunday night in Zhongli, nearing 9 PM, there weren't many dining options left.
The cold weather and heavy rain made me crave a steaming hot bowl of soup.
On my way home, I noticed the newly opened Shilin Mutton next to Zhongli's famous Ah Lun Stir-Fried Mutton. The place had drawn quite a crowd when it first opened, so I decided to give it a try tonight.
Overall, the seasoning here is average, but the meat quality is excellent.
As advertised on their sign—"No processed meat used"—you can tell they use fresh, hand-cut meat with a satisfying chew and thickness.
Next time, I'll bring friends to try their stir-fried dishes, which would likely be more enjoyable.

Shilin Mutton [Shilin Stir-Fried Beef & Mutton (Datong Branch)] 士林羊肉 [士林炒牛羊肉 (大同店)]
No. 86-3, Datong Road, Zhongli District, Taoyuan City (桃園市中壢區大同路86之3號)
The shop is simple but clean, likely because it's newly opened.
Seating is limited, mostly four-person tables, making it ideal for group meals.
After entering, grab a menu and choose your seat. Once you've decided, order and pay at the counter.
Their menu is quite extensive—fried rice, noodles, stir-fried pork/beef/mutton dishes, vegetable sides, and soups. However, prices feel slightly high.
Since I was dining alone, I only ordered stir-fried noodles and soup.
After ordering, the staff immediately started cooking. Interestingly, the chef was a Southeast Asian woman.
The total came to NT$200 for noodles and soup.
On a cold, rainy winter night, hot food is always comforting.
However, the flavors were just okay—I only drank half of my angelica mutton soup before giving up.
Utensils and condiments are self-service.
Pork Stir-Fried Noodles (豬肉炒麵) $100
The noodles had a unique texture—a mix of white noodles, yellow noodles, and udon-like chewiness.
Not super firm, but pleasantly springy.
The sauce was light, with a mild vegetarian-style sha cha (沙茶) flavor, less intense than mainstream brands.
The real standout was the pork—thick, fresh slices with natural marbling, not the processed kind found in hotpot restaurants.
Angelica Mutton Soup (當歸羊肉湯) $100
Served piping hot, but the angelica broth lacked depth.
On the plus side, it wasn't overly medicinal, just mildly warming.
Again, the meat was the highlight—chunky, hand-cut mutton with a firm bite.
Leaner than usual, it had a stronger mutton taste, which might not suit those sensitive to gaminess.
Final Thoughts
✅ Pros:
-
High-quality, fresh meat (no processed cuts)
-
Clean, casual setting (good for groups)
❌ Cons:
-
Seasoning is underwhelming (soups lack depth)
-
Pricey for solo diners (better value for groups)
Verdict:
A decent spot for meat lovers, but if you're after bold flavors, Zhongli's more established mutton shops might still reign supreme.
Would you try it? Let me know in the comments! 🐑🍜
